Foods

Mark what your baby has had. "Liked" and "Tried" go into the plan; "No" foods rest for a couple of weeks (they often come around). Untried foods get offered as new ones.

Allergens

A new allergen every day or two (Canadian guidance: no need to wait days between them), mornings, tiny amount first, watch for 2 hours. One new allergen per meal so you can tell what caused anything. Once tolerated, the app nudges you to keep it in rotation a few times a week.
Mom's allergies (cashew, pistachio, mango, avocado): Canadian guidance for babies with an allergic parent is still to introduce at home around 6 months, without testing first; severe first reactions in infancy are extremely rare. The real precaution is for Mom: Dad handles these, and hands and face get washed before cuddles. "Doctor first" stays available as a status if you'd rather have your pediatrician in the loop.
What a reaction looks like
  • Mild β€” stop the food, call your doctor or 811: hives, red blotches, lip or face swelling, vomiting, a spreading rash, sudden runny nose or sneezing.
  • Severe β€” call 911: trouble breathing, wheeze, tongue or throat swelling, pale or floppy, repeated vomiting, or two body systems at once (hives + vomiting).
  • Redness only where food touched the skin is usually irritation, not allergy.

Shopping list

Built from this week's plan, plus whatever you add. Checked items clear when you refresh.

Sunday batch-cook (30 min)

  • Roast a tray of sweet potato, squash and broccoli.
  • Cook a pot of red lentils with cumin and garlic; freeze in ice-cube trays.
  • Make 6 small beef or chicken meatballs (no salt); freeze.
  • Hard-boil 3 eggs; keep 2 days in the fridge.
  • Thin a jar of nut or seed butter with a little water for the week.

Tips and reassurance

You are not behind
  • Milk is still the main nutrition until 12 months. Solids now are about practice, exposure and iron.
  • Two meals a day at 8 months is a fine base; most families reach three between 8 and 10 months.
  • The one thing to prioritise now: lumpy and soft finger-food textures, which Canadian guidance wants in place by 9 months.
  • Offer an iron-rich food at two or more meals every day.
  • Your job: what, when and where. Baby's job: whether and how much.
The plate formula
  • Iron food at most meals: meat, egg, lentils, beans, tofu, fortified oat cereal, peanut butter.
  • Fruit or veg: whatever is soft, ripe and in the house.
  • Energy + fat: oats, rice, pasta, toast, potato, yogurt, cheese, olive oil, butter, nut butter.
  • Think balance across the week, not within one meal. Repeats are good.
Textures and finger-food shapes
  • PurΓ©es, mashes and soft finger foods all count. A 2026 review of the trials found baby-led feeding does not raise choking risk or hurt iron status when iron-rich foods are offered, so your mix is well supported.
  • Gagging is most common in the first weeks of finger foods and drops off by 8 months; that is the skill being learned.
  • Finger food at 8 months: two-adult-fingers size, squishable between thumb and finger.
  • When the pincer grasp shows up (8–10 months), move to pea-sized pieces.
  • Cut round foods (grapes, cherry tomatoes, sausages) lengthwise into quarters.
  • Nut butters: thin them into oatmeal or yogurt, never a spoonful straight.
Not yet
  • Honey before 12 months, including cooked or baked in.
  • Whole nuts, whole grapes, popcorn, hard raw veg, hard candy.
  • Added salt and sugar; watch deli meat, canned foods and sauces.
  • Cow's milk as a drink before 9–12 months, then whole 3.25% up to 750 mL a day. Juice is never needed.
  • If you use cow's-milk formula, keep it regular (even a small daily amount) rather than occasional; irregular formula is linked to milk allergy.
  • High-mercury fish (fresh tuna, swordfish). Salmon, cod, sardines are great.
Gagging vs choking
  • Gagging is loud, red-faced and normal; it's how babies learn to move food around.
  • Choking is silent. Sit baby upright in a high chair, never eat lying down, always stay with them.
  • An infant CPR refresher (Red Cross, St. John Ambulance) is an hour well spent.
Refusals, mess and low-appetite days
  • It can take 10–15 offers before a food is accepted. Rejection today means nothing.
  • Offer milk first, solids 30–60 minutes later, so baby is curious, not frantic.
  • Eat together when you can. Watching you is half the learning.
  • Teething, colds and growth spurts all tank appetite for a few days. Keep offering, don't push.
Water, vitamins, cups
  • Offer a few sips of water in an open or straw cup with meals.
  • Vitamin D 400 IU daily is the usual Canadian recommendation for breastfed babies; ask your doctor.
  • Ask about an iron check if solids have been light.
Where to get help (Nova Scotia)
  • 811 nurse line, 24/7, for "is this a reaction?" questions.
  • Your family doctor or pediatrician for the allergen plan.
  • Health Canada "Nutrition for Healthy Term Infants 6–24 months" and the CPS/CSACI allergy-prevention statement (2021). Content checked September 2026.

Possible reaction

Call 911 now if: trouble breathing, wheezing, tongue or throat swelling, pale or floppy, repeated vomiting, or two body systems at once (e.g. hives + vomiting).
Mild (hives, red blotches, lip swelling, one vomit, spreading rash): stop the food, keep Daley upright and watched, call your doctor or 811. Take a photo of the skin. Most mild reactions settle within a couple of hours.

Your baby

Make it long and not guessable; it is the only thing protecting your data.
